Vertical Alignment of Math Program to SBAC
Why This Is Important
The SBAC is the state-mandated assessment of California’s Common Core State Standards – Math resulting in CAASPP scores used by both K-12 and higher education. The exam embeds assessment of students’ Math Practices and the use of digital tools. Aligning the assessment to a site’s math program allows students to demonstrate knowledge of CCSS-M while allowing teachers to streamline their site’s foundational math program to a college readiness metric.
Targeted Outcomes
- Priority 4: Math Indicator – Student Achievement via SBAC/CAASPP Scores
- Priority 8: College/Career Indicator
- Priority 2: Implementation of State Academic Standards
- Priority 7: Access to a Broad Course of Study
- EAP
Who Should Participate
- Math Teachers
- Math TOSA(s)
- Site and District Math Administrators
Deliverables
Living MS Excel spreadsheet aligning grade levels by SBAC Claim, Target and Standard designed for use over time to set targets and monitor student performance.
Training Details
Teachers will learn how Common Core State Standards – Mathematics and Math Practice Standards (SMP) are assessed by the SBAC. Teams of up to three grade levels will work collaboratively to identify any gaps between the standards and their math program, identify key concepts for each grade level, and align assessments to SBAC. Teams will map out a vertical alignment document organized by SBAC Claim.
Day 1: CCSS-M and SBAC Aligned Key Concepts
Day 2: Alignment of SBAC Claim 1 (Concepts & Procedures)
Day 3: Alignment of SBAC Claims 2-4
Cost
$4,500 for three full-day sessions on-site for up to 30 participants.
Development of SBAC-Aligned Common Assessments
Why This Is Important
The SBAC/CAASPP/EAP is the state-mandated assessment of California’s Common Core State Standards – Math. The scores are often used by both K-12 and higher education to determine a student’s math placement. This assessment is unique in several ways, including the assessment of students’ Math Practices and the use of digital tools. Aligning the assessment to a site’s math program is crucial as this allows students to demonstrate their learning on this high stakes test.
Targeted Outcomes
- Priority 4: Math Indicator – Student Achievement via SBAC/CAASPP Scores
- Priority 8: College/Career Indicator
- Priority 2: Implementation of State Academic Standards
- Priority 7: Access to a Broad Course of Study
- EAP
Who Should Participate
- Math Teachers
- Math TOSA(s)
- Site and District Math Administrators
Deliverables
- Assessment Plan, Including Formative and Summative Exams
- SBAC-Aligned Common Assessments
Training Details
This work consists of two parts: (1) creating a grade-level or department-wide assessment plan, and (2) creating common assessments to measure student performance. The assessment will identify instruments, implementation plan, accessing data, using data, and needed technical support. The common assessments created may be mid-term, final, or benchmark exams that align to SBAC with data analysis available through district SIS.
Day 1: Assessment Plan. This full day session includes a collaborative review and analysis of available assessments for progress monitoring, selecting current assessments, identifying needed assessments, creation of an assessment calendar, identification of required technical support, and a data analysis schedule.
Day 2: Develop Common Assessments (one day per assessment). Building on the needs assessment from Day 1, common assessments are developed using the CAASPP Item Specifications. Items will be loaded into the district SIS and tagged for Claim, Target, and Standard for data tracking and analysis.
Cost
$1,500 for Assessment Plan plus $1,500 per assessment (one assessment per day). Each full-day session on-site for up to 30 participants.

Training Details
This is an intensive experience that requires access to site data and involvement from the principal, AP (over mathematics), department chair, and math department. The schedule below does not include days providing technical support to site to collect and access data. The entire process is up to four months, depending on the types of data to be collected and analyzed.
Day 1: Admin PD. Working with site administration, determine all math data available for analysis, set goals, determine technical support needs, assign math lead. Review SPSA.
Day 2: Math Lead PD. Train Math Lead(s) in Accessing and Analyzing Site Data.
Day 3: Math Lead PD. Working with Math Lead, analyze site data to identify course-level trends. Identify potential outcomes to present to teachers. Co-plan customized PD and prepare site-based data reports.
Day 4: Teacher PD. Data Analysis Session #1. Implement department-wide PD reviewing data sets and reports, identifying content to target for improvement, and identifying post-test assessment.
Day 5: Teacher PD. Data Analysis Session #2: Review Outcomes from action plan developed in Session #1. Identify best practices to continue in future data cycles.
Day 6: Admin PD. Report outcomes to admin team, including challenges and best practices.
